Once a landmark building in Taiwan, the Taipower Building has, over time, become increasingly disconnected from its surroundings due to its closed-off design and spatial constraints—making it feel out of place within the vibrant cultural atmosphere of the nearby Wenluo-ding neighborhood.
To address this, the “Territory of Light” initiative was launched to better integrate the building with the community. Guided by the concept of “Connecting with Nature,” the design team proposed a series of environmental enhancements: linking neighborhood corridors, creating a more comfortable pedestrian experience, introducing well-planned open spaces, and incorporating public art into a greened setting. These elements work together to improve the accessibility and public nature of the building’s open space.
In addition, the building’s ground level has been opened for public use, allowing the Taipower Building to become part of the local daily rhythm. A key design move was the transformation of the entrance canopy, which was reshaped and extended to create a transitional space between the building and its exterior. This soft, human-scaled volume helps break the building’s formerly austere image, defines the entry points at both ends of the block, and serves as the structural foundation for integrated public art installations.
