Located on the outskirts of Taitung City, National Taitung University is nestled between mountains and sea, offering a scenic natural backdrop. Inspired by this setting, the Library and Information Center rises in a mountain-like form from north to south, ascending toward the Pacific Ocean, while along the lakefront, a lower, meandering volume stretches outward. The intersection of these two forms defines the building’s entrance, with the mountain-shaped library serving as a landmark on campus that echoes the surrounding terrain.
In response to the local climate, the building adopts an expansive, low-profile mountain form to enhance seismic resistance. Green roofs help retain moisture and insulate against heat, while thermal buoyancy vents release trapped warm air to promote natural ventilation.
The facility bridges the dormitory area, academic zone, and lakefront. An outdoor terrace on the second floor offers spaces for gathering and self-study, while a lounge on the southern end provides a casual setting for students outside of class. The landscaped rooftop invites visitors to climb and enjoy panoramic views, and the sloped northern terrain doubles as an outdoor amphitheater. Designed to blend ecology and humanistic values, the library fosters a sustainable and symbiotic learning environment—one that leaves lasting impressions through a harmonious integration of architecture and nature.
