Due to limited space and safety concerns with aging buildings, National Matsu Senior High School underwent a comprehensive campus redevelopment in 2003. The design follows the site’s natural terrain and integrates with the surrounding environment to maximize ocean views while establishing a network of interconnected outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces.
All original buildings constructed with sea sand concrete were demolished, while three structures—the library, administration building, and student dormitory—were retained. These buildings are repositioned as key nodes within the new campus layout: the library remains near the new school entrance with its original function; the administration building is repurposed as specialized classrooms, and its adjacent western plaza continues to serve as a community entrance. The slope of the former main entry is extended through the new academic building to connect with a newly created lower plaza. The existing dormitory at the campus center is transformed into a student activity center, anchoring the ocean-facing plaza south of the academic zone.
The campus design gradually opens from north to south, with the dormitory and academic zones converging at a central oceanfront plaza. Equipped with pergolas, seating, and a viewing deck, the plaza offers stunning views of Jieshou Village, aircraft landings, and the vast blue sea.
