Located at the edge of the city, the site is surrounded by mostly low-rise buildings, requiring thoughtful consideration of height restrictions and how to harmonize with the surrounding context. Due to elevated roads and levees, the ground level lacks strong connectivity to the Keelung River, so the design includes two entrances and a double-height lobby as a transitional space. A front courtyard helps define a clear and welcoming entry sequence.
The building massing reflects its functional zoning through solid and void strategies—warehouse areas are expressed as solid, heavy forms, while office spaces are open and transparent. The overall exterior resembles a pulled-out box, symbolizing Caves Books as a treasure trove of knowledge. Materials were chosen to reflect the company’s identity and convey a sense of solidity, with a calm, understated palette that emphasizes the natural textures of each material.
Office spaces are located in the upper floors to take advantage of broader views, while a rooftop garden offers employees a place to relax. The ground level is reserved for warehouse functions, with a circulation layout designed for operational efficiency.
